Karon Beach
Karon Beach can only be describes as breathtaking. A 3km long bay of soft golden sand, which can be completely deserted in some places. If you are looking for a beach on the island of Phuket where you and your family can have their own private strip, then Karon Beach is where you need to be.
Entire stretches of Karon Beach are entirely undeveloped. Nothing more than the Andaman Ocean in front, soft golden sand underfoot and wild jungle behind. A real castaway experience close to a major tourist town.
If you do intend to visit the more secluded parts of Karon Beach, then be sure to take plenty of refreshments with you. Towards the northern end of Karon Beach, which is the quietest end, there are no shops or restaurants, and it can be a long hot walk to the closest.
Behind the beach is the main road, and it is the close proximity of this road which has stopped Karon Beach becoming yet another beach which is cram packed with food stalls, deck chair rentals, jet-skis and hawkers. There is simply no room for them. Across the road are the front facades of major hotels and resorts. Some section of the beach also have access to shops and restaurants just across the road.
The northern end of Karon Beach is the most attractive, as it is almost completely devoid of the kind of tourist focused facilities more usually found on the beaches of Phuket. On one side sits Nong Harn Lake, which has been developed into a beach side public park. This is a lovely park to explore on foot, and there are also exercise facilities, as well as a cycling/jogging track.
If you need a break from the beach, or you need to keep young children entertained, then Dinos Park Mini Golf course is very close. This is a totally individual attraction, there is probably nothing like it in the whole world. A mini golf course, set in a park which is populated by full sized reconstructions of dinosaurs, and featuring an erupting volcano.
it should be noted that people who intend to enjoy the far northern end of Karon Beach may have problems arranging for transport home afterwards. The road at this end of the beach is quiet, taxis and tuk-tuks do not often use it, you will have problems flagging down and empty one. Either take your own transport, or arrange to be picked up at a certain time, to ensure that you do not get stranded, or face a long walk in to town.
Karon Beach is one of the last mainly unspoiled, underdeveloped beaches to be found on Phuket. In the center it is a fully developed tourist beach, but out at the ends it is far quieter. Whatever your taste in beach time, you will find the perfect location somewhere along the golden sands of Karon Beach.
