Kata Beach

Kata Beach is actually a name given to two separate beaches, the main beach, and a smaller beach named Kata Noi Beach (little Kata Beach). The main stretch of Kata Beach is generally considered to be one of the best tourist beaches on the island of Phuket, sitting in number two position behind Patong Beach. 1.5km of soft golden sand, with every facility close at hand to ensure that holidaymakers have everything that they require.

Kata Bay is a short journey to the south of Karon Beach. A charming bay, lined with palm trees, and small beach side restaurants. Kata Beach is very popular with families, due to the safe shallow waters of the bay being ideal for swimming for most of the year. However, during the monsoon season which runs from May until October, the sea can become rougher. At this time of year Kata Beach becomes a popular spot for surfers, as they try and catch some of the best waves to be found in the South of Thailand.

Every amenity that beach lovers could possibly need is just a short stroll away at most. beach side restaurants and bars provide refreshment. Thai massage is available right on the beach, or in one of the air conditioned massage parlours which are located within many of the resorts which line the bay. There is also a selection of small craft and art shops to explore for that perfect holiday bargain.

Visitors to the beach during December will be rewarded with the impressive view of dozens of colorful yachts anchored in the bay, as they take part in the annual King’s Cup Regatta. At this time of the year the beach is always busy, if you are looking for tranquility and seclusion then Kata Beach in December is simply not an option.

The town of Kata is split into two main parts, Kata Center and Kata South. Kata Center is where most of the shops and restaurants are located, with Kata South being almost entirely populated by boutique style resorts.

A short taxi ride South of the main Kata Beach is Kata Noi Beach. This is a secluded cove, which offers scenery reminiscent of the movie “The Beach”. People do not visit Kata Noi Beach for the excitement, this beach is about as laid back as a back gets. However, it is well worth a visit to soak up the stunning natural scenery.

Both Kata Beach and Kata Noi Beach are recently developed beaches. Where other beaches such as Patong Beach simply grew as the area developed, Kata Beach has been planned, and the local government has made sure that the natural beauty of the beaches is maintained. Palm trees are left uncut, and beach vendors are encouraged not to spill out on to the sand. The result is a tourist beach very reminiscent of the South of France, plenty of things to do, but kept clear of the beach.
