Naiharn Beach

Naiharn Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches in the Southern part of Phuket. Located close to the coast road, heading south over the hills past Promthemp Cape, Naiharn beach is quite easy to find.

Naiharn Beach is not particularly large, it is less than a kilometer in length, and can be quite narrow, especially around the time of the lowest tides. It also has some of the largest waves to be found around Phuket, and this makes it popular with surfers, body boarders and other water sports enthusiasts. This also means that during some parts of the year, when the seas are a little rough, Naiharn Beach is not very family friendly. In contrast, during the time of year when the seas are calm, Naiharn Beach is perfect for families. Plenty of seating in the shaded restaurants, within just a few meters of the sand, means parents can sit and enjoy a cold drink whilst keeping an eye on the young ones.

Naiharn Beach is still a very Thai beach, and every weekend hundreds of Thai people flock there during the summer months. One look at the beach and the surrounding area makes this entirely obvious. Beach side restaurants are cram packed with tables and shady umbrellas almost down to the edge of the sand. These restaurants are inexpensive, and serve some of the best fresh seafood dishes to be found anywhere on the island.

For those who prefer western food over Thai, then just across the beach road is a selection of small restaurants, bars and cafes, many of which serve a good range of western dishes, although at slightly inflated prices.

If you feel like splashing out, then walk up the coast to the Royal Phuket Yacht Club, which clings to the hillside at the Northern End of the bay. The restaurant facilities are open to the public, unless there is a special function in effect, or a member of the Royal Family is visiting.

However, for the very best food and view which this area has to offer, then head up the hill towards Promthep Cape (take a Tuk-Tuk) and you will find a mountain top restaurant, set in its own herb gardens, which commands an incredible view out across Naiharn Bay and the Beach Below. Very few restaurants can claim such and idylic setting, do not miss it, it is breathtaking.

Just behind Naiharn Beach, close to the large man made saltwater lagoon, is Wat Samnak Song Nai Harn. This is a fantastic example of a local Buddhist Temple and has recently been extended and redeveloped. If you need to get away from the sun and surf for a while, then exploring this charming temple will provide a change of pace.

Naihran Beach is one of the best beaches on Phuket, although it does not have the usual tourist feel to it, a good place to experience the Thai take on beach holidays.
