Short Stay - Visa on Entry - For visitors from many countries, who are only intending to stay in Thailand for a short durations, such as holidaymakers, they will be able to obtain a visa on entry, meaning they will not need to apply for a Thai visa before their holiday. The length of the visa granted on entry depends upon your method of entry in to the country. For visitors entering Thailand via an airport or sea port, a visa on arrival will be granted with a duration of 30 days. For visitors entering Thailand through a land border, a visa on entry will be granted with a duration of 14 days.
Medium Term - Tourist Visa - For those visitors who wish to remain in Thailand for a longer duration than covered by a visa on entry, then a Thai tourist visa would be required. These are available as a double entry visa, allowing two visits to Thailand, totalling 60 days each visit. Additionally, each visit may be extended by a further 30 days by visiting a local immigration office.
Long Stay - Non-immigrant Visa - A non-immigrant visa is the only option for visitors who wish to stay in Thailand for an extended period. The most popular is a Non-immigrant type O visa, which allows the holder to stay in Thailand for a whole year, although they must leave the country once every 90 days. Most people simply hop the closest border on what has come to be termed a “visa run”, and are back at their home in Thailand with the day.
Overstay of Visa - If you do overstay your visa, then you will be fined when you leave Thailand. The current fine is 500 Baht per day, with a maximum fine of 20,000 Baht.
