Phuket Town

Phuket Town is the only real metropolitan area to be found on the island of Phuket. Phuket Town is of interest to visitors to Phuket, as it gives a snapshot in to every day Thai life, that is if the visitor is willing to look beyond the parts of this small city which have been developed solely for holidaymakers.

Early in the morning, you will find monks gathering arms from the local community, to be taken back to the local temple and shared as part of the communal morning meal. At the same time, the local food markets are doing their morning trade, as Thai people shop for their daily food. This is a typical start to the day for most Thia people who live outside of the major tourist areas.

Phuket Town has recently been granted full city status, and is the administrative center for the entire island. Government offices, as well as the largest police station on the island, as well as the major hospitals, are located within Phuket Town. It is also the islands travel hub, with a large central bus station, serving destinations all over Thailand.

Modern Phuket Town is a mix of traditional Thailand and Western influenced culture. From budget street stalls to luxury restaurants, Phuket Town has it all. In the evening, take your pick of venue, from the small relaxed Thai bars to fully westernised nightclubs.

Over on the western side of Phuket Town is the Chinatown district, and this is a great place to explore on foot. Steeped in Chinese culture an history, visitors get to taste a lifestyle which although Thai in basis, has a uniquely Chinese in flavor.

Phuket Town is also possibly the best place to spend a day shopping. Wander the local street markets looking for bargains, or spend some time inside one of the air conditioned shopping malls taking a break from the heat.
