Diving

Thailand remains one of the best value scuba diving destinations in the world. Both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Ocean offer an incredible dive experience. With the exception of possibly Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, the very best scuba diving is to be found around Phuket and the surrounding islets.
There are dozens of dive shops all over Phuket, offering both PADI and SSI scuba diving certification.
The most popular course is the PADI Open Water Certificate, once completed this certifies the diver to dive to a depth of 18 meters. This is usually a two day course, half a day in the classroom, half a day in the local swimming pool learning how to use the equipment and then a full day out on a dive boat. This is arguably the best way to try scuba diving as a beginner.
One of the great things about scuba diving around Phuket is the sheer range of dive sites which are easily accessible. Beginners will often find they are taken out to both Racha Noi and Racha Yai, a pair of larges islets a short distance offshore from Rawai. More advanced divers can take an overnight or weekend trip out to the Similan Islands, for a relatively unspoiled underwater extravaganza.
For something a little more challenging, there are several wrecks close to Phuket, including King Cruise Wreck, which is close to the Anemone Reef dive site. For this reason these two sites usually make up a day’s diving, and this is one of the most popular dive itineraries on Phuket.
Whatever your experience level, you will find the perfect dive experience in the crystal blue waters around Phuket and its islands. Whether you simply wish to book a day out on a dive boat, or are interested in studying for your divemaster qualification, Phuket is the perfect Thailand destination.
